1. The Best Outdoor Punching Bags

Century Original Wavemaster Freestanding Heavy Punching Bag Review

The Century Wavemaster is a great option for an outdoor punching bag. For starters, it’s very easy to carry around. So when your workout is over, you can just move it inside.

Even if you plan to leave it on the yard, you don’t have to worry about rust or damage from the elements, because the base doesn’t have any metal parts in it. The only thing you need to do is cover the heavy bag itself, so it doesn’t get damaged from the sun or the rain.

Weighing 250 lbs, the Century Wavemaster is extremely stable. Once you fill the base properly, it won’t move around no matter how intensive your workout is.

It’s easy to fill, and it’s got adjustable height – it goes from 47 to 68 inches. So, whatever your height is, you can find a level that’s comfortable for you. The adjustable height also makes it easier to work on body shots and body kicks. Which is especially useful if you’re doing kickboxing or Muay Thai.

The only con is that it lacks sufficient padding, so you’ll need some good bag gloves if you plan on having long workouts with it.

Overall, the Century Wavemaster is a really high-quality free standing punching bag at a very reasonable price point. So if you’ve got the budget, I’d definitely recommend it as the best standing outdoor punching bag!

Century Original Wavemaster Freestanding Heavy Punching Bag

Pros:

  • Great quality and durability
  • Adjustable height
  • Easy to fill
  • Great value for money
  • Easy to assemble

Cons:

  • Not the best padding. You’ll definitely need to use bag gloves for it

FITVEN Free Standing Punching Bag Review

The FITVEN Free Standing Punching Bag is another great option for an outdoor punching bag.

It even comes with a pair of decent boxing gloves! It weighs 205 pounds, and has 12 suction cups to hold it in place. But if you want those solution cups to get a good grip, you’ll need to put them on a concrete slab or some other smooth surface. Things like dust, pebbles, and dirt will be very problematic for those suction cups.

Still, if you have a smooth surface for the suction cups, this is a very stable punching bag. Even if you hit very hard, it’s going to stay put and won’t fall over.

It’s nearly 6 feet in height, so you can comfortably practice all kinds of kicks. This makes it a great choice for Muay Thai and kickboxing.

In terms of downsides, the bag has a thin profile. This isn’t a problem for more advanced fighters, since it gives them more of a challenge trying to strike it. But if you’re a beginner, you may struggle while lining up your shots.

Another problem is that some users found that the bag broke after more intensive workouts.

Still, many more were very satisfied with it. So, if you’re looking for a good free standing punching bag, you can’t go wrong with the FITVEN. Just make sure you have somewhere in your yard where those suction cups can get a good grip.

FITVEN Freestanding Punching Bag with Boxing Gloves Heavy Boxing Bag with Suction Cup Base for Adult Kids - Men Stand Kickboxing Bag

Pros:

  • Easy to set up and install
  • Good quality and long-lasting
  • Made of sturdy materials
  • Very stable base

Cons:

  • The size of the punching surface is small
  • Some users found the punching bag broke after intensive workouts
  • The area for putting sand into is not large enough
  • The suction cups need a solid surface to grip

Dripex Free Standing Punching Bag Review

Dripex have always had stellar boxing equipment. Their Free Standing Punching Bag is no exception. It has a very wide base, which normally makes these bags very stable. It also has some really good suction cups that help it stay in place.

But just like the FITVEN, if you don’t have a hard, smooth surface, those suction cups aren’t going to be very useful.

Other than that, the bag has a really good shock absorption system that helps keep it more stable. On top of that, it’s got springs that help with noise reduction. So even if you hit it very hard, it’s not going to fall down or make a huge ruckus.

It’s also very affordable, making it perfect if you’re on a tighter budget. In terms of cons, the biggest one is that – even though it’s more stable than your average free standing bag – it’s still not as stable as something like the Century Original Wavemaster. This is because the Dripex has a higher center of mass. So if you punch or kick very hard, and plan on having very intense workouts with it, then this might not be the best choice for you.

But if you’re a beginner, or just want a more affordable free standing punching bag, then the Dripex Free Standing Punching Bag is a great choice!

Dripex Freestanding Punching Bag, Heavy Boxing Bag with Stand for Adult Youth - Men Standing Boxing Punch Bag for Home Gym Workout

Pros:

  • Sturdy with strong suction cups and springs
  • Easy Assembly
  • Compact enough so that it won’t take up much space
  • Excellent quality for an affordable price

Cons:

  • High center of mass – might fall over if you pack a strong punch
  • The hole for filling the base is on the small side. Be careful when filling it.

RDX Free Standing Punching Bag Review

The RDX Free Standing Punching Bag is a great choice for an outdoor punching bag. Although it’s made of synthetic leather, it’s very durable, and is padded really well. This means that you won’t need high quality bag gloves when using it, because the padding is soft enough to not hurt your hands. You can even use the boxing gloves that come with it. Even though they don’t have the thickest padding, the bag is soft enough that it isn’t a problem.

In terms of the stability, it’s got a very wide base. So even if you don’t have a smooth surface for the suction cups, it’s not the end of the world. See, the suction cups stand on long prongs that serve to widen the base even more.

A major con is that it can break during particularly intense workouts. So, while it may be a good option for beginners, I wouldn’t recommend it for advanced fighters.

RDX XXL 330LBS Freestanding Punching Bag with Cover & Gloves – 72” Adult Heavy Pedestal Punch Bag Set - 17 Suction Cup 8 Extended Legs Stand Base - Kick Boxing MMA Muay Thai Home Gym Fitness Training

Pros:

  • Very good padding. You won’t need expensive bag gloves for it
  • Great value for money
  • Very solid base

Cons:

  • Some have complained about the bag breaking after very intensive use

Everlast 70-Pound MMA Heavy-Bag Kit Review

If your outdoor space has a convenient tree branch or beam for a hanging bag, or if you have a heavy bag stand, then this Everlast may be just what you’re looking for.

Even though it’s made of synthetic leather, it’s very durable. In fact, in this case being made of synthetic leather is preferable. This is because synthetic leather is extremely resistant to water. Add to that the fact that the bag doesn’t have any openings in it (as the straps are stitched onto it), and you’ve got a great, water-resistant punching bag. It even comes pre-filled, so you can start using it right away.

The only downside to it is that the gloves included in the kit aren’t the best. They come in only one size, so if you have smaller hands, you might have problems with them. Still, if you don’t have proper bag gloves, these will do nicely.

All in all, a great choice for a hanging outdoor punching bag.

Everlast Leather Heavy 70 Pound Punching Bag with Chain and Swivel Assembly, 5 Ounce MMA Kickboxing Gloves and 180-Inch Boxing Hand Wrap, Black

Pros:

  • Good value for money
  • Very durable
  • Water resistant
  • Comes filled, you can start using it right away

Cons:

  • The gloves in the kit aren’t the best

RDX Punching Bag Set Review

If you’re looking for a more affordable free standing punching bag, then this RDX Punching Bag Set is a very good choice. It’s very durable for the price, and easy to set up. It’s also water resistant, which is a great thing if you plan to leave your bag outdoors.

It’s almost completely sealed off. But, the zipper on the top is a potential weak spot. If you plan on leaving it outdoors, you should definitely make sure you have a heavy bag cover for it.

Another downside is that the filling it comes with is a bit too soft. So, I’d suggest you change the filling if you’re more advanced, and want to work on your conditioning. Still, given the price, it still offers great value for money.

RDX Punching Bag Heavy Boxing Bag, Filled 4ft 5ft Anti Swing Kickboxing Adult Set, Maya Hide Leather, Punch Gloves, Muay Thai MMA Home Fitness Gym Training

Pros:

  • Very durable
  • Stable – when filled properly, it doesn’t fall over
  • Easy to set up

Cons:

  • The padding is a bit too soft

RORALA Free Standing Punching Bag Review

The RORALA Free Standing Punching Bag is another great choice for beginners. The punching bag is 5 feet and 9 inches high. So it’s great for training both punches and kicks.

It has a shock power distribution system and 12 strong suction cups to keep it still. Making it a great choice for kickboxing. It even comes with some very decent boxing gloves.

It uses high-quality stainless steel tubing, PU leather, and dense foam. So it’s going to last you quite a long time.

Still, if you hit particularly hard, then the bag may fall over. Especially if the suction cups don’t have a good grip.

But overall, this is a nice, compact free standing punching bag that is great for using outdoors. Especially if you’re a beginner.

RORALA Punching Bag with Stand 70’’-203lbs, Freestanding Heavy Boxing Bag Including 12OZ Pro Gloves for Adult Youth, Men Stand Kickboxing Bags

Pros:

  • High-quality materials
  • Stable base
  • Affordable price for the value
  • Well-made and easy to use

Cons:

  • A bit hard to assemble
  • Some users complained about the suction cups falling off

GIKPAL Free Standing Punching Bag Review

If you’re a more advanced fighter, then you should definitely take a look at the GIKPAL Free Standing Punching Bag. Standing at 5 feet and 7 inches, it can run a little short for some people. Still,  it’s a good enough size for boxing, kickboxing, or Muay Thai. The bag itself is quite durable, and it’s made of synthetic leather. Meaning that it’s going to be quite water resistant.

The base is also pretty stable. So even if you punch and kick really hard, it’s going to be stable.

In terms of cons, the bag itself is a bit harder. So you’ll definitely need to use bag gloves and shin pads when training. It’s also kind of heavy, so it won’t be the easiest to move around after your training session is over. But if you plan on leaving it out in the open, then that shouldn’t be a problem.

Overall, the GIKPAL is a good free standing punching bag. It’s definitely a good choice for using outdoors.

GIKPAL Freestanding Punching Bag 67'' -182lbs Heavy Boxing Bag Free Stand Kickboxing Bag with 2 Hand Warps for Adults Youth Men

Pros:

  • Sturdy base
  • Excellent height
  • Stays in place and doesn’t move when boxing

Cons:

  • A bit heavy; hard to move around
  • The punching bag may not be large enough for some
  • The padding on the bag is hard. Definitely use bag gloves on it
  • Very heavy to move around

Ringside Heritage 90-pound Genuine Leather Boxing Punching Heavy Bag Review

The Ringside Heritage 90-Pound Heavy Bag is definitely one of the highest-quality punching bags you can get. It’s made of thick, cowhide leather which gives it an extremely high durability. No matter how intense your workout, this bag can take anything you throw at it.

It even has a soft striking surface, so you can even punch it without boxing gloves (although i’d still recommend using gloves, especially if you’re a beginner). The bag comes with high-quality, heavy duty chains, so you won’t need to buy any additional equipment in order to mount it.

It even comes pre-filled, so you can start using it straight out of the box.

The major downside to this punching bag is the price. But when talking about premium products, you get what you paid for. And if you have the budget, this bag is definitely worth it, and it’s absolutely the best hanging outdoor punching bag.

Ringside Heritage 90-pound Genuine Leather Boxing Punching Heavy Bag

Pros:

  • Made of genuine leather – extremely durable
  • Soft striking surface – you can work on it even without gloves
  • Comes pre-filled

Cons:

  • Very expensive

Last Punch Heavy Duty Punching Bag Review

For those of us who might find the Everlast 70-Pound MMA Heavy-Bag Kit a tad too heavy on the wallet, the Last Punch Heavy Duty Punching Bag steps into the ring as a formidable contender when it comes to hanging punching bags. It may have a somewhat modest size, but it more than compensates with its user-friendly filling process and commendable durability, particularly considering its budget-friendly price point.

Admittedly, its size might not match up to the standards of larger counterparts, but with the right choice of dense filling material, this compact pugilist still packs a solid punch, offering a satisfying workout experience.

Overall, the Last Punch Heavy Duty Punching Bag earns its stripes as a cost-effective choice for those seeking a dependable outdoor punching bag. While it may not be the heavyweight champion in terms of durability or size, its affordability, ease of filling, and ability to brave the elements make it a solid contender in the world of budget-friendly punching bags. So, if you’re looking to unleash your inner fighter without emptying your wallet, this bag could be your ticket to a knockout workout

Last Punch Heavy Duty Punching Bag with Chains

Pros:

  • Very affordable
  • Easy to fill
  • Made out of canvas. Will stand up to the elements

Cons:

  • Not as durable to intense punching sessions, compared to other materials
  • The bag is a bit small. You can’t add a lot of weight to it

Everlast 40lb Heavy Bag Review

Like the 70-Pound MMA Heavy Bag Kit above, this Everlast 40lb Heavy Bag offers a very good value for money. It’s durable, and it comes pre-filled, and you can start using it right away.

First off, what sets this bag apart from the rest is the fact that it comes pre-filled. That means you can practically rip open the box, hang it up, and start throwing punches immediately. No tedious stuffing sessions or extra trips to the store for fillers – it’s a real time-saver.

The Everlast 40lb Heavy Bag is built like a tank, which is just what we want in a sparring partner. It can take a beating and still keep swinging. However, here’s the scoop: it’s crafted from synthetic leather. Now, don’t get me wrong; it’s not a deal-breaker, but if you’ve got a hankering for the real deal and crave the durability of genuine leather, you might be slightly disappointed. But hey, for those of you just dipping your toes into the world of martial arts or boxing, this bag is a champ.

The only thing holding it back from greatness is its synthetic leather construction. While it’s not a deal-breaker for beginners, advanced fighters might want to look elsewhere.

Everlast Everlast 40LB Heavy Bag

Pros:

  • Sturdy and durable
  • Comes pre-filled – you can start using it right away

Cons:

  • Somewhat hard, make sure you use gloves
  • Made of synthetic leather

2. Can Punching Bags be Left Outside?

Before I go into specifics, we first need to talk about using a punching bag outdoors. Just like anything else, leaving a punching bag outdoors will lead to a lot of wear and tear. Much more than if you had kept it inside.

Left outside, your heavy bag will be completely exposed to the elements. Rain and humidity can worm their way through any tiny gaps they can find, which can cause the bag to rot, and any metal parts on it to rust (even if it says the metal parts are rust-proof, sometimes that isn’t a guarantee). The scorching sun and its UV rays can crack the fabric. The next time you punch it, all the filling will pour out.

So while it’s perfectly fine to have your heavy bag sessions outdoors, I strongly recommend dismounting your heavy bag when you’re not training, and storing it someplace indoors.

If your situation doesn’t allow for storing your heavy bag inside (or you just can’t be bothered), there are ways to protect your outdoor heavy bag.

3. How to Protect Your Outdoor Punching Bag

If you have to store your punching bag outside, there are several things you can do.

3.1. Use a Punching Bag Cover

Get a large tarpaulin, and cover your heavy bag once you’ve finished your workout for the day. Make sure the tarpaulin is made of PVC, vinyl, polyethylene or some other waterproof material.

It’s also important to cover the entirety of the punching bag so that there’s no way for any water to get inside of it.

If you have a hanging heavy bag, then it’s also a good idea to get some waterproof chain sleeves, as well. Even if the chains are marketed as “rust proof”, sometimes manufacturers save on materials by using cheaper steel. The only way to find out if your chains are truly rust proof is to let them get wet frequently. And in my opinion, it’s best to err on the side of caution, and just buy some cheap chain sleeves.

3.2. Get a Waterproof Punching Bag

Even if you have your punching bag under a cover, it’s still a good idea to get a waterproof outdoor punching bag. Especially if you live in a more humid area.

This is because at night the temperature is lower than it is during the day. As the temperature drops during the night, objects cool down and form dew.

Once that dew forms on your heavy bag, it will make the outer layer soggy. That sogginess will then get inside the filling, and make it rot out – especially if the bag is filled with rags. If it’s filled with sand or grains, then the bag will become rock-hard and way too heavy. This will not only make your heavy bag borderline unusable, but it can even lead to injury.

But if your outer is waterproof, this will protect your punching bag, and not let the water damage the filling. It will just stay on the outside, and you can wipe it clean before you start your workout.

Here’s an outdoor punching bag I use in an open-air fitness. It’s been here for over a year, and it’s absolutely fine. The crucial thing is that it’s waterproof

4. Types of Punching Bags – Which is Best for Outdoors?

There are two types of punching bags – hanging and free standing. And each of them has their own pros and cons.

First, let’s look at free standing punching bags.

4.1. Free Standing Outdoor Punching Bags

Free standing punching bags come with a base, usually filled with water or sand. One of the best things about free standing punching bags is that they’re extremely easy to set up.

You just fill the base of the bag, and you’re good to go! No need to make a stand, drill your ceiling, or do annoying DIY.

Another advantage of free standing punching bags is that their shape is closer to the shape of a human body. This can make for more realistic training. It can help you improve your accuracy when targeting the jawline and the temples, which are knockout punches. This is even easier if you use a free standing punching bag like the B.O.B.

Of course, free standing punching bags have some drawbacks. For one, if the base isn’t filled properly, they can fall over if you hit them too hard. This can also happen if your heavy bag is too light for you, or if it isn’t very well made.

Another disadvantage is that they are usually more expensive than hanging punching bags.

Still, free standing punching bags are a great choice for using outdoors. They’re easy to set up, and their compact nature makes them very convenient to move around if you need to use your outdoor space for something else.

4.2. Hanging Outdoor Punching Bags

The best thing about hanging punching bags is that they’re very sturdy. No matter how hard you punch them, there’s no chance of them falling over, like free standing bags sometimes do.

Hanging heavy bags also swing when you strike them. This can really enhance your workout, as you need to reposition yourself, and be more dynamic and adaptive in your combinations.

Since they’re a lot simpler in design, hanging punching bags are generally cheaper than their free standing alternatives. Especially if you don’t have to buy a stand for them. But even when you have to buy a heavy bag stand, the combined price is often cheaper than the price of a free standing bag.

Of course, hanging heavy bags do have their drawbacks. One of them is that setting them up is a lot harder than setting up a free standing bag.

That set-up also makes disassembling moving around a hanging punching bag much more time-consuming than for a free stander.

Still, if your set-up allows for it, hanging punching bags are a great choice for using outdoors. Especially if you’re handy with a toolset, or just have a place to conveniently hang it from (like a beam or a sturdy tree branch).

4.3. Hanging Punching Bag Stands

If you don’t have a beam or a thick branch to hang your punching bag from, then you’ll need a heavy bag stand. Setting one up can be quite an involved process. But it’s definitely worth it.

For one, it can allow you to adjust the height of your heavy bag. Something which is much harder if you just have it hang from a tree. Also, there are some punching bag stands that also have an attachment for a speed bag. Which can really enhance your workout.

Still, there’s one big drawback to punching bag stands. Namely – their price. A lot of them can cost as much as a whole free standing punching bag. And that’s without including the cost of the heavy bag itself. When add that, too, the overall cost gets even higher.

Another problem is rust. Most heavy bag stands are made of metal, and if you live in a humid area, you can expect that metal to get rusty over time. This is why I recommend you use an anti-rust spray or paint on your heavy bag stand. Personally, I recommend Hammerite. It’s originally made for ships. I’ve used it before, and it’s never let me down. You can even use it to paint over rust that’s already formed.
