They also can’t be used on hard surfaces without damaging the rope. Most of these ropes have some kind of soft cover for the cable (usually rubber or silicone). But when that cover rubs against the steel and a hard surface, it quickly gets torn off. And once that happens, the cable gets frayed and the rope becomes useless.
So make sure your gym has rubber flooring or some other soft surface.
