Best To Increase Speed: Cobra Reflex Bag
When preparing for a competition, you don’t want to leave the final decision to the judges. You want to win that belt. The easiest way to train like a world star champion and win your next competition is with the Cobra Reflex Bag.
The Cobra Reflex Bag has a high-set spring in the center of the steel pole that responds to heavy hitting with a rapid rebound movement that simulates an actual opponent’s movement. In addition, the cobra allows you to take advantage of your opponent’s weaknesses by strengthening your striking form with adjustable height settings and a stable base.
Pros:
- Heavy faux leather foam punching bag
- Sturdy recoil spring suitable for high-level boxing and mixed martial arts training
Cons:
- May be less effective with a water base fill
- No replacements for punch bags
2. What is a Reflex Bag?
A reflex bag is a compact, freestanding training weapon every boxer should have in their toolbox. Reflex bags are often easy to set up, using sand or water in the base to keep them stable. The reflex bag allows you to train your stikes and increase your speed, footwork, head movement, and coordination.
3. Benefits of Using a Reflex Bag
There are several huge benefits to using a reflex bag. It:
- Helps you improve your defense: Unlike heavy bags or speed bags, reflex bags use a spring to simulate offensive boxing movement so that you can focus on your defense as well as your offense.
- Improves your hand-eye coordination: When punching a reflex bag or a cobra bag, you need to quickly react to its moves and its constantly changing position. With time, this is going to greatly improve your hand-eye coordination.
- Improves your reaction time: Although your strength and technique are essential for boxing, the ability to react quickly to your opponent as if it is also super important. A reflex bag helps you train these instincts by improving your hand-eye coordination. This will improve your reaction speed without relying on a sparring partner or coach to do drills with.
- Improves your timing: An essential aspect of bag work is to improve your timing. A reflex bag is a great way to do that. Unlike a speed bag, since you need to use real combinations when hitting it, you can work on your real fighting skills when using a reflex bag. You can also do this on a heavy bag, but a heavy bag doesn’t move nearly as fast as a reflex bag does.
- Improves your footwork: When you use a reflex bag, you constantly need to be on your toes. If you hit it hard, it’s going to move around in lots of different directions. This is going to force you to improve your footwork and work on your timing and positioning
4. Disadvantages of Using a Reflex Bag
Like all things in life, reflex bags have some drawbacks, as well. For example:
- You can’t work on your power punches like you can on a heavy bag: Since a reflex bag is much lighter than a heavy bag, it won’t give you as much resistance as a heavy bag does. So, if you’re only looking to improve your raw power, then a reflex bag isn’t right for you
- It doesn’t move as fast as a speed bag: Speed bags are designed to be light and move fast. So while a speed bag will provide less resistance than a reflex bag, it’s going to move much more quickly. So, if you’re looking to have the have the speed of Jaron “Boots” Ennis when he KO’d George Sosa in December 2017, then you should go for a speed bag
All that being said, though, a reflex bag is a good medium between a speed bag and a heavy bag. It can give you some good resistance and speed. But if you’re a beginner and only have the budget for one piece of gear, then I’d go for a heavy bag. Once you become more experienced, you can get a reflex bag to work on your speed and defense.
5. How To Choose the Best Reflex Bag: A Buying Guide
If none of these bags seem like the right option for you, there are plenty more on the market that could be the perfect fit. When searching for the ideal reflex bag, here are a few criteria to keep in mind.
5.1. Height Adjustment
The best reflex bag can customize to your height. Most of them can be adjusted to be as tall as 72 inches.
But if you’re not sure what’s the best height for you, a good rule of thumb is to keep the bag at eye level or slightly lower. A lot of guides say that a reflex bag should be at the level of your chin.
But in my experience, at chin level, a reflex bag is very awkward to hit, especially with straight punches. This is why I advocate keeping it at eye level.
5.2. Weight of the Base
Whether you are new to the reflex bag and searching for the best bang for your buck or a seasoned fighter seeking the best weapons to enhance your training sessions, a reflex bag with a stable base is crucial to your safety for two reasons.
First, a reflex bag without much weight will fall over. If you live in a small apartment, this could damage your furniture or flooring. In the worst-case scenario, you could severely injure yourself during training. A reflex bag with a heavy base will enhance the training session by allowing unrestricted focus, more extended drills, and heavy punching.
Beginners can fill great reflex bag bases with water, sand, crumb rubber, or rock. The best option is usually to fill the base with sand or rock for durable stability since sand weighs more heavily than water. A sturdy bag can also allow you to incorporate footwork into your training session.
5.3. Spring Quality
Although reflex bags all support fighters honing in on their reflex skills, not every reflex bag is equal. For example, some reflex bags have the spring at the base of the pole while others utilize the center of the pole for their spring back reaction time.
The standard spring sits at the bottom half of the pole, allowing the reflex bag and pole to move in rebound motion as your opponent would, albeit slightly slower, allowing beginning fighters to develop their reaction times. Springs in the center of the pole, also known as the cobra bag, mimic the body moving faster than the standard spring.
The cobra-style spring is the best option for fighters that want to improve their cardio and accuracy with rapid-rebound movement. The standard reflex bag is ideal for novice boxers and professional fighters that need to focus on comprehensive striking and reflex reactions.
5.4. Material Quality
Great reflex bags with high-quality materials can support a variety of training drills for prolonged amounts of time. High-quality reflex bags are available in genuine leather, while lower-quality bags use faux leather or vinyl.
Genuine leather bags have a longer life than faux leather reflex bags. However, manufacturers use synthetic materials to make inflatable reflex bags have a shorter life with heavy usage than reflex bags that use dense foam materials.
Depending on your training preferences, reflex bags are available in rubber and dense foam materials like PVC. However, some of the more durable materials may have sharper edges that can cause damage to your hands, so make sure you have a good pair of gloves when boxing to keep yourself safe.
5.5. Types of Reflex Punching Bags
There are three main types of reflex bags:
5.5.1. Standard Reflex Bag
This is the most common type. It’s got a thin pole and a bag at the top, filled with foam. They’re similar to a double-end bag, but they’re heavier. They’re mainly aimed at improving speed and footwork
5.5.2. Heavy Bag-Style Reflex Bags
These types of reflex bags tend to be heavier. The pole is usually made of steel and it doesn’t move as fast as a standard reflex bag. These bags are great for beginners who find a standard reflex bag too fast for them. It’s also good for fighters who value speed more than power.
I’m personally not a fan, because I think the biggest advantage of a reflex bag is its ability to combine training speed and power. And heavy bag-style reflex bags compromise the speed aspect of that, leaving you with a subpar version of a heavy bag.
5.5.3. Combination Reflex Bags
As the name suggests, combination reflex bags have different modules used to help practice your defense. They can have reaction bars, padding at the stick for kicking…
Their only downside is that they tend to be more expensive. But if you’ve got the budget, you should definitely consider them, because they’re really fun and useful!
6. Final Thoughts: The Best Reflex Bag
Finding the perfect reflex bag for your training isn’t always easy. You have to consider your budget, needs, and experience to determine which bag will be the best option for you. Luckily, determining which reflex bag will work for you is easy with a comprehensive list of options like this one.
