A freestanding punching bag is a fantastic way to become assimilated into the world of combat sports. They are ideal for kids who want to start a martial arts discipline and great for adults looking to get in shape and improve their health status.

Freestanding punching bags are great for beginners looking to improve their skills or those wanting to improve their cardio. They’re also an excellent way to practice many different kinds of kicks. They’re especially convenient for people who don’t want to drill holes in their ceiling to hang a traditional heavy bag.
Freestanding bags typically have sand or water-filled anchors at the base instead of a ceiling connection like a more traditional-style hanging bag. There are several advantages and disadvantages to owning a freestanding bag, which we will cover below.
The Dripex Freestanding Punching Bag is an improved version of their older models, which had a harder surface and clunky base. Unlike them, it has powerful suction cups underneath the base that can be attached to smooth surfaces, and is different in that it also sways instead of remaining static.
So, if you have concrete or laminate floors, you don’t need to worry about the bag sliding around, as the suction cups will keep it firmly in place. It’s got a shock absorption system to keep it even more stable. And if you’re concerned about noise, the springs above the base help with sound reduction during use.
- Pricing: Dripex freestanding punching bags are reasonably priced and generally cheaper than its competitors.
- Innovation: The innovative suction cups and tension springs make it stand apart from the older clunky and stationery models.
- Ideal for beginners: Simple features make it an excellent option for beginners looking to get started with martial arts training. Freestanding bags are perfect for people to practice their kicks and punches.
- Portability: These bags are ideal for fitness boxing and kickboxing classes and make for easy transport and storage once you empty the bottom of all the sand or water.
- High center of mass: If you pack a really strong punch, the bag may topple due to its high center of mass. But this shouldn’t be an issue unless you’re a professional
- Small hole for filling the base: It is not a good option for those who want to improve their overall punching power and are more experienced boxers. Competitive kickboxers usually do not get many benefits, either. The padding materials inside the bag can also slump down, making the center pole easier to hit over an extended period.
A significant drawback of the freestanding bag for those with heavier punches is that it can topple over if hit with a hard enough combination of punches and kicks. Dripex has added suction cups to their freestanding bags, which is something older makes and models don’t typically include.
The manufacturer also constructs this bag with several layers, giving it better shock absorption than competitors. It is never a good idea to hit the bag with your bare hands, but the unique shock absorption feature allows for smaller use of gloves like mixed martial arts (MMA) gloves.
It comes with thick leather, a power buffer layer, elastic foam, and a polyurethane liner filled with cotton at the top. Dripex freestanding bags are held up by thick tensioned springs that make excellent shock absorbers, making them move much smoother and more naturally than older models without tension springs once you hit them.
Along with the suction cups and extra padding for shock absorption, the springs help ensure that the workouts are much quieter than what comes with hitting a swinging punching bag or a freestanding bag that is weighted down with sand or water. The chains from the hanging bag also tend to rattle and make a lot of noise.
The Dripex freestanding bag offers many benefits, from its sturdy base, all the way to its durable punching bag.
3.1. Sturdy Base
As I already mentioned, the Dripex Freestanding Punching Bag has a very stable base. Once you fill it with sand or gravel, you can be sure that the bag is going to stay in place. There are also suction cups at the bottom that help the base stay in one place.
This won’t be of much help if you’ve got a thick carpet, but if your floors are smooth, the added stability will definitely be of help.
In addition to that, the base also comes with springs for shock absorption. Not only do they help with stability, but they also make the punching bag less noisy.
3.2. Easy Assembly
The Dripex bag is very easy to assemble. The adult bags have a container at the bottom that you can fill with sand or water to weigh them down. The suction cups are a bonus that prevents them from moving around.
3.3. Thin Punching Bag
The punching bag itself is quite thin. For most beginners, this might be a problem, because it makes the bag harder to hit. But this is actually a blessing in disguise!
Having a thin punching bag helps you develop your accuracy and timing. So even if it seems more difficult when you’re starting out, you’re actually working on skills that will drastically improve your fighting.
3.4. Very Compact
Along with the base, the Dripex Freestanding Punching Bag is very compact. This makes it perfect for smaller training spaces. Be it a smaller gym or a tiny basement, chances are, you can fit it in very easily.
Even once you assemble it, it’s very easy to move around. So, if you’re training at home and need to use your training space for something else during the day, being easy to move is a serious benefit.
Dripex have always offered a great value for money with their gear. And the Dripex Freestanding Punching Bag is no exception. While there are better freestanding heavy bags out there, there aren’t many at such an affordable price.
As with any product, the Dripex freestanding punching bag also has drawbacks. Here are some of the bag’s disadvantages.
4.1. High Center of Mass
While the Dripex Freestanding Punching Bag has a good and sturdy base, it still has a high center of mass. So if you pack a strong punch, and plan on having very intense workouts with it, then this might not be the best choice for you. Still, the bag can withstand quite a lot of punishment. So, unless you’re training to be a professional, this shouldn’t be a problem.
4.2. No Padding Above the Base
If you’re planning to use this bag for kickboxing or Muay Thai, then you should keep in mind that there’s no padding on the springs. And if you catch your shin on that part of it, you could really injure yourself.
So, if you want to practice low kicks on it, you should definitely tie a Thai pad to it or some other form of padding.
4.3. Hole at the Base is Small
Although it’s not a deal-breaker, the hole for filling the base is on the small side. So you should be careful when filling it.
4.4. Not the Best for Taller People
Since the bags are not that tall, usually standing a few inches under six feet, they are ideal for people who are also under six feet tall. The reason is that a taller person will be forced to punch down, which is an improper technique. The ideal bag height must be at least as tall as the person hitting it.
It also makes it more difficult for taller people to move around the bag to practice their foot movement properly. Not only does having to punch down encourage improper technique, but the taller a person is, the more room is needed to move around the bag.
If you do not feel that the Dripex freestanding punching bag is right for you, you might be interested in checking out several alternatives from competitor brands. There are many other brands available, but none contain more than the new technologies offered by Dripex, most notably the suction cups and tension springs.
Here are a few alternatives to consider.
Century Original Wavemaster Freestanding Heavy Punching Bag
While Century is a prominent boxing gear brand, their adult freestanding bag is not as good as Dripex’s. There is no suction cups or tension springs, causing it to move around the room. You will pay more for the brand name than the basic design.
However, this freestanding bag is easily portable and height adjustable, making it ideal for taller people. The anchor base is less bulk and weighs 270 pounds, lessening the risk of it toppling over. You can see my full review for the Wavemaster here.
FITVEN Freestanding Punching Bag
FITVEN is a new brand of boxing and kickboxing equipment. They offer a version of the freestanding bag similar to the one promoted by Dripex. FITVEN allows you to remove the springs to hit a moving or stationary target. The anchor base can weigh over 200 pounds when filled with sand.
Whether you are looking to put on boxing gloves for the first time or you are someone who has a decent amount of gym experience, working out on a freestanding bag will allow you to sharpen your skills while improving your cardiovascular system and overall coordination.
Dripex offers new suction-cup technology and tension springs to add a more natural sway to the bag once you hit it, making it a leading innovator in the combat sports fitness market. Taking advantage of these new features by working out at least thirty minutes a day, several days per week will significantly improve your skill set and overall confidence.
